On this day in history, July 3, 1962, Tom Cruise is born, goes on to star in 'Born on the Fourth of July'

Hollywood celebrity Tom Cruise was born July 3, 1962.  Syracuse-born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV began performing in the 1980s.  "He is known for his clean-cut good looks and versatility," says Britannica.com.  

His parents were Mary and Thomas Mapother. Biography.com cites his mother as an amateur actor and teacher and his father as an electrical engineer.   

After divorcing, Cruise's parents moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and Glen Ridge, New Jersey, when he was 11. Father and mother died. According to Biography.com, Cruise, his mother, and three sisters were dyslexic.   

Cruise excelled athletically but suffered academically.  The same source indicates he considered professional wrestling until a high school knee injury.  

According to the same story, Cruise entered a Franciscan seminary at 14 to become a priest but left after one year.    

Cruise debuted in 1981's "Endless Love," played supporting roles in "Taps" and "The Outsiders" (1983), and starred in 1983's "Risky Business" about a high school senior who turns his parents' house into a brothel.  

Britannica says Cruise's portrayal of Navy jet pilot Maverick in 1986's highest-grossing picture "Top Gun" consolidated his stardom. In 1986's "The Colour of Money," Cruise starred opposite Newman.   

Two years later, Cruise played an autistic man's arrogant brother in "Rain Man," which won four Oscars in 1988 for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Dustin Hoffman), and Best Original Screenplay.
